You have to make the 2D text curves, and then make the text by hand from the curves. Make the text "Hello" and rotate it 90 degrees so it's standing up. Then duplicate it and move the duplicate backwards, so that one set of "Hello" curves is behind the other. Now, loft each corresponding curve from the back Hello to the front Hello. Then, planar all the curves from each letter. Now you have renderable, 3D text.
Not hard at all. Using text tool, make text (using curves). Bevel plus. Tweak to taste.
