Creating a flag in Maya
on Feb 28, 2006 at 7:29:38 pm

Hi guys, Sean :)

wondering how to create a flag with a projected 2D surface. need the flag to have waves, as when blown by wind... I guess just a surface, but then animating the ripples and so on scares my imagination. so I'm gonna tackle this right now, yet any help is welcome :)

Thanks!

In order of increasing complexity, difficulty and realism:

* Deformers
* Softbody dynamics
* Cloth simulation

Actually, the cloth sim might not be more complex than the softbody approach... depends how detailed you want to go.

Deformers such as the 'sine' deformer can be applied for a simple, cartoony look.

Softbodies with springs are the 'poor man's cloth'.

Check the docs; I think there are flag tutorials in there somewhere.

Thank you Steve,

I jumped to the tutorial before I read your post and it works fine. The animation is for a very simple logo, my bread and butter for now :) So nothing complex, used springs with gravity on a nurbs surface, works fine, hardware reandered ok. Thanks for your help!!!

Have a great day!

Hi,

I couldn't find the flag tutorial on the COW site, but here's another that I found useful in the past...
