image made up of particles, not shattered

Any pointers here....
Let me describe what I'm trying to achieve.
Imagine, if you will, a plane in NTSC proportions (4x3) that is made up of particles. When viewed head-on, or when the camera is perpendicular to the plane it would look normal. However if you move the camera to the side or even if you pushed far enough into the plane it would become apparent that you are surrounded by particles.

What I would really like to do is project a texture onto these particles so that the image would appear "whole" and push into the field of particles to reveal that the image is made up of "particles.

Any thoughts, direction or suggestions would be appreciated.

We wrote a script for this in house once. Essentially what we did was instance a group of poly planes, and planar project a texture onto the group. Hope that helps.
