Maya hardware render - no alpha channel?
on Dec 28, 2005 at 7:25:18 pm

Hi all! I just completed a short and simple animation for the leadin of a DVD, and had a heck of a time rendering it out. I was using Maya Unl. 4.0, and couldn't get it to give me an alpha channel with the hardware render. So I let it render out the full animation overnight with the software renderer, but for some reason, it totally destroyed the animation!!! All I got was 1456 frames of frame 100 or some such nonsense! :-(
So I ended up taking my hardware render and did batch processing in Paint Shop Pro to add an alpha channel to each frame and re-save it out. :-(

Anyway, I'm hoping to upgrade to Maya Unl. 7.0 soon... does it have the same problems?

Here is some links to the finished short animation:

what type of graphics card do you have? The hardware alpha for the old hardware render buffer in maya 4.0 is totally dependant on the compatibility of the graphics card. Maya 7.0's newer hardware render technology is even more strict about what graphics cards and drivers are supported.

Ah, right... I meant to include that info. I've got an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro.
