There are many thing to consider when actually rendering your animation in MAYA.
First of all you should know what you need in the end of your production. For instance I'm doing an animation a the moment for a short movie. The movie was shot on DVCAM so I need an animation similar in size and quality, and so on and so forth.
But the general workflow for doing an animation wihtout considering specific setting for sizes and quality, would be:
1) Make your anim i maya.
2) Batchrender it to a image sequence.
3) Import the images as an image sequence in you NLE-program (such as Premiere Pro/Avid) or your comp program (after FX/Combustion).
But man! These three steps are very very general. It like saying "buy a ticket and fly" to someone who asks you about how to travel.
