converting a Canon XL1S to memory card

I have a Canon XL1S that I bought a couple of years ago, taking advantage of the low price since most prefer to not use tape these days. It's in excellent condition, I'm used to it, like it, and don't want the investment to go to waste.

Then yesterday my JVC miniDV deck died after many years of use. To replace that would be so expensive, I thought well what if I just use the camera to capture from until the playhead wears out.

...And in the meantime get an adapter so I can record onto memory cards and just not use tapes anymore. Then when the camera finally gives out I'll just get a digital camera and there won't be a useless deck lying around.

Does anyone have any experience with attaching something to the Canon XL1S (or similar model), or to the tripod, with which you can output to memory card straight from shooting with no tape? Like what works best with that camera, something kinda minimal. I see these guys,

but I was hoping to get away with finding something used under $300. Or at least something that saves me enough money that it's not just like buying another camera anyway.

Thanks in advance!

I've been using the Datavideo DN-60 for a couple of years. Best bang for the buck.
