Done Transcoding 7D Footage - Can I delete my H.264 Files?
on Jun 19, 2010 at 2:42:16 am

Hi all,

I'm somewhat new to transcoding my work prior to editing in a non-offline scenario. I have transcoded several hours of 7D footage (H.264 files) to ProRes 422 files. I will edit and deliver in ProRes, too. My question is, can I delete the original H.264 files now that I have my ProRes versions and have backed them up? Under what circumstances would I need to reference the originals? I just really need to free up some drive space.

Thanks!

Seth

I never delete the originals, even though I transcode with Cineform's NeoScene. Although this and Apple ProRes are great for archiving, you never know if these codecs still work in ten years time.

In other words, better be safe than sorry. Hard drives aren't that expensive these days, so it all depends on where you place your value...
