How to adjust volume levels on the EOS 7D?
on Mar 8, 2010 at 3:13:31 am

Hi. Is it possible to adjust the volume levels on an EOS 7D?

Or is it possible to view/meter the volume levels?

Thanks,

Norman

It is possible to adjust the microphone level in the menus.

There are no volume meters as of yet, this is one of the shortcomings of the camera. Magic Lantern released firmware for the 5d mark ii that put audio meters, but has yet to release firmware for the 7d to do that.

There are a lot of people (such as myself) that record audio separately and sync in post, but that is complicated and requires the additional expense of an audio recorder of some type.

Hm. Ok, thanks.

So do I just have to do some test recordings, and guess at the right levels until the firmware comes out? :(

Pretty much... yes.

You could also see about running audio through an external mixing board of some type and then into the camera. Everything would be mixed together (with multiple microphones) BUT you would get the ability to monitor audio right off the board.

Personally I use the ZoomH4n as a shotgun mic, and it has four channel recording with 2 xlr/quarter inch inputs on it. So I can monitor all four channels and record separately, or have the output of that just run straight into the camera. But usually I leave it separate and sync later in post.

Robert Rozak suggests the juicedLink DN101.

Any comments?

Does that offer discrete recording for at least two channels? I suppose you could pan two inputs left and two inputs right, and record straight to camera. I haven't used this type of setup, but supposedly the microphone cuts off when an external input is detected, so this should work fine, and you'd get your audio meters right below the camera.

One thing to think about with this setup would be what I ran into with my ZoomH4n... originally I had it mounted to the top of my camera, but accessory management became an issue. If you go this route you may want to look into cage solutions for the DSLRs, such as the indiSquare or Jag35 also has a cage now, so you can have cable management, and easily mount things such as wireless mics, etc. The indiSquare is probably the cheapest option out there, but I haven't found solid reviews on the product yet.

Norm:

Here's the link with the new upgrade for the 5D. I know this doesn't help those of us with the 7D for audio. Maybe they'll give us the same patch later.

This patch will now allow the 5D owners to manually adjust volumn as well as other cool features.

Thanks.

We are anticipating 80% of all views online, so my editors both said I am doing fine with my present HF S10. So due to budget reasons I am returning the camera for now, at least until they come out with a model that does not have a 12-minute limit (because I shoot more than 12 minutes at a time a lot). Perhaps by then they will also have the audio issues figured out, and may have it on a normal camcorder body.

Sighhhhhhhh......... I really wanted that camera....

Kind of an old thread but I though I would add that I don't think they will record longer soon. Other than the heat issues there is some legal stuff with the EU where if they record longer than X they get taxed as a video camera which is quite a bit higher. That is what I have read a few times anyway.

Technology can be improved but governments not so much.
