I recently bought a Canon Vixia HF20 to replace my old camcorder. I'm slowly learning about AVCHD. The editing software I intend to use, Adobe Premiere Elements 7, doesn't seem to be able to recognize my camcorder (which puzzles me), but at least I can capture my camcorder's footage using the bundled software. APE7 is able to import that captured footage, so it's ok (though I'd really prefer if APE7 could do the capture itself). My problem now is that I'm not sure my computer can handle AVCHD. While videos play fine when using the camcorder's bundled player, APE7 has a hard time playing them smoothly even without modifying them in any way, so I can imagine that actual editing might be a problem.
If it turns out I can't edit AVCHD after all, well, it would be too bad, but I wouldn't mind too much if I had to downgrade to regular DV AVI, the format produced by my old Sony DCR-TRV900, a MiniDV camcorder. However, I have no idea how to convert the AVCHD video to regular DV. It is possible to set things so that it's captured directly in that format, or do I need to convert it after capturing it? How is it done?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
