Can the xh-a1 be used as a pass through to monitor work in adobe premiere and AE. If so how.

If the video software is capable of monitoring "live" via FireWire:

Connect the FireWire from the computer to the the camera.
Connect a video monitor to the the camera's S-connector or composite (yellow) connetor.
Connect amplified speakers to the camera's audio output jacks.

Turn on the camera (in VTR/Playback mode).

Open the video software.

Doesn't work ... The stupid thing is that it worked with a 200.00 camcorder but won't work with a 3k one...

You must be doing something wrong. Make sure the a/v I/O switch for composite connections is set for output.

Where is this switch .. in the camera settings .. I have been through them a hundred times. I can get a signal to the monitor when I play a tape from the camera but not when I open adobe AE PPro

behind the terminal cover. Actually it doesn't say in or out... I was doing this from memory (which is dangerous :)) It switches from V2 (bnc) or the A/V1 terminal. Page 99... at least in the pdf manual.

Try the av-dv button on the remote control. Haven't done it myself with my AH X1, but that's how it works with my other Canon cameras...

Hi,

Are you trying to monitor Standard Definition DV from the XH A1 -or- are you trying to monitor HDV in real time as you edit?

Please do let us know asap so we can help you out.

I just connected my AH X1 to Premiere Pro and it is displaying SD output on both the viewfinder and external monitor. I don't think that you can pass HDV video back up the firewire to the camera.

One thing to watch out for - fire up Premiere before you connect the firewire to the camera. Otherwise the camera will stay defaulted to what it was doing before - If you were passing HDV, the camera won't switch to DV.

It is not possible to monitor HDV in real time through an HDV camcorder like you can monitor Standard Definition DV in real time through a DV camcorder. You'll need an interface like a Matrox MXO to monitor HDV in real time as you edit.

Please check in with the Cow's After Effects Forum on how to monitor After Effects on an NTSC monitor if that is what you are trying to do.
