Canon XH A1 - Does it capture in High Definition
on Mar 16, 2007 at 9:32:18 pm

I am moments away from buying the Canon XH A1. I am a bit confused about the difference between the XH G1 and the XH A1. Does the Canon XH A1 capture in High Definition DV?

Yes..................the only difference is the G1 has HDMI and time code jamming. Same picture quality etc.

It does not have HDMI. Please visit Canon's website.

The G1 has the pack of outputs that includes HDSDI and timecode. Yes, the quality is EXACTLY the same if taken out of firewire. Get the A1 unless you absolutely need the HD SDI or timecode ports.

Hi guys,
Is that SDI output really necessary? I thought that SDI output is only needed for HD footage. Since this camcorder shoots in HDV, why did they included SDI output?
This my post is not an expertise by any means. I am totally new into this, so it is more a question, not the advise. By the way I am almost reday to buy A1 myself, so is it really that good how everyone says? What about the fact that it does not shoot in 720p mode. Is it a big deal?
Cheers
Paul

Depends. If you just edit HDV, then no. If you are in a studio with HDSDI capture
capabilities, live switching or use a Wafian recorder, yes.

It will give you better quality, but at the hefty price of more expensive equipment and
MUCH larger file sizes.

No. It is not. Firewire transfers compressed HDV or DV signal.
HDSDI transfers uncompressed 10bit 4:2:2 HD.
