Canon Console CCU application for multiple cameras
on Jun 12, 2006 at 1:25:17 am

Hi -
please forgive me if this has been asked, as I am new to this forum.
If you wish to use the Canon Console software for CCU control of the Canon
XL-H1 camera (via firewire of course) - what if you are trying to control
3 CCU's for a 3 camera shoot? Do you use 3 seperate computers, or 3 firewire ports, running 3 programs open at once ?

What do you do - (I just read the pdf manual).

Bob
If you use CCU on a hub each camera shows up as a seperate addressable cam. At least that is how it was explained to me at NAB. Kind of like sharing printers over USB. Also do you have three of these, and what is your impression of this camera. We are looking to buy at least two, possibly three. I have only seen them at NAB, and still a little unsure if I want to jump in now or wait for a something from Sony that competes.

I just left the Canon Show in NY City and the person who was running the software said it was 1 computer per camera. I asked about using a firewire switcher or hub and she said that i was a feature request by people but not a reality. I am not sure if this is the last word but it was the one I got today

Well Dan, I guess Gene is incorrect, or the salesperson you spoke to is incorrect. It is VERY DISAPPOINTING that Canon does not address this on their website, and it is VERY DIFFICULT to get info about the Canon Console CCU application from the web site at all !

It seems insane to have to have THREE computers to control 3 cameras - I can only assume that the Canon demo person was incorrect about this - I did not go to the Canon booth at NAB, but I was told that there was only one computer as well, and it is very frustrating not being able to get accurate info.

As far as "waiting for Sony" - this is the ONLY camera on the market that has HD-SDI out and Genlock in for a 2 or 3 camera HD shoot (unless you have the "big bucks"). To use the Sony HDV cameras, you can only use the Roland Edirol HDV switcher, which has inputs for analog YRB HD signals. The Canon acts like a REAL camera, but it's only 9 grand. I do, however, need CCU capabilities to match the cameras, and I wish I could get more info on how to do this.

It would be nice to have an answer to this for once and for all. Has anyone tried it yet?

Console is currently designed to operate one camera (XL H1, XL2, XH G1, XH A1) per computer.

Laptops are cheap these days.
