SDI output Definitive answer
on Jan 18, 2006 at 12:41:13 am

There seems to be confusion (at least in my mind) about the SDI output on the XLH1.
I understand the camera will give uncompressed HD LIVE out the SDI port.

My questions are regarding output from recorded tapes:

1. Does the SDI output deliver 4:2:2 quality from a Standard Def DV tape?

2. Does the SDI output give better resolution/specs/colour space from an HDV tape?

3. If not covered above, what differnece is there outputting thru the SDI port compared to firewire?

The SDI outputs are uncompressed "real time" outputs. This enables you to hook up a HDCAM, DVCPROHD, DVCPRO50, DigiBeta etc deck to your XLH1 and capture directly to that deck, OR to a computer equipped with an HD-SDI or SDI capture card (Blackmagic, Kona etc).
The output is 4:2:2 uncompressed, which translates to approx 1.4 gbps for HD and 270 mbps for SD. Now remember that DVCPROHD uses 100 mbps and DV 25 mbps and you see the difference in bitrates!

If you shoot to tape that will be either DV or HDV. That stream you can transfer over FireWire.

Hope this answers your questions!
