External Blu-Ray Drive Won't Mount From eSATA Connection, but...
on Feb 6, 2013 at 8:07:18 pm

Hi guys,

I'm in the middle of a big Blu-Ray project for a feature film right now - working in Encore on a Mac Pro, OSX 10.6.8. I just got a new external Blu-Ray writer that will only mount via USB. The eSATA port doesn't seem to be working. However, when I plug the drive in via eSATA, and then power it on, the green light inside of my tower (visible through the grill on the back, near the eSATA card) comes on when I switch the drive on. So clearly, the drive is connecting to the computer, it's just not mounting? Any thoughts?

FYI:
I've tested different Hard Drives with the same eSATA cable, and they successfully mount.
The Blu-Ray Drive is NOT coming up in Disk Utilities

Thanks,
Chris

I have the exact same problem, except my Mac Pro is on Mountain Lion. I have no idea how to make the Blu-ray burner work from the eSATA port.

What esata card do you have? Are the drivers up to date? Will an external hard drive mount via esata?

I'm running a 2008 Mac Pro on mountain lion with LaCie 4-port esata card and LG esata burner. Burning Blu-rays with no problems.

I have the eSATA card that came with my G-Speed ES RAID, both of which work fine as-is. All applicable drivers were updated when I upgraded to Mountain Lion.

FYI the Blu-ray burner did not work on eSATA under Snow Leopard either.

Hey guys,
Sorry I haven't answered this in a while. Turns out my eSATA card doesn't mount optical drives. Luckily a new card will only cost about 45 bucks. Still annoying though.

Thanks, Chris, for passing that along. I'll bet that my eSATA card can't handle optical drives also.
