How to make best qual DVD from Avid DnxHD file?
on Oct 11, 2010 at 2:14:42 am

So I just finished a short film and my mastered digital format is a Avid DNxHD 1920x1080 23.98psf quicktime that is about 18.25gb.

I want to make the most professional and high quality DVD possible from this file so I was wondering what encode to do?

So far I've tried taking it into Compressor, then using the Apple - DVD 90min Best Quality codecs to spit out the ac3 and m2v. Is this the best possible way to do it? Since that compresses it to about 500mb and I know the dvd can hold much more I was wondering if there was a higher quality encode I could do since my film is only 13minutes and 18.25gb.

Thanks for any info.

Best,
Rob

Well the very highest settings are not always a good thing because many players cannot play them and you get 'stutter'. If you are sending the DVD's to other people therefore you want to be quite sure they'll play correctly.

I do not find that Compressor is the best application for encoding. I use the specialist DVD encoding software made by the Swedish company Innobits and it's called BitVice which is universally highly regarded. It gives you the opportunity of choosing an average bit rate (I use about 6.75) and if set for a VBR it makes two passes and gives really good quality DVD's and prepares both the m2v and ac3 files.

If you are editing on an HD timeline have you thought about making a Blu-Ray disc or are you concerned that there aren't enough Blu-Ray players around yet?

Thanks for the tip and I'll look into BitVice. Blu-ray isn't really a concern right now, but might be later on. I'm more curious if given the tools at my disposal (Quicktime Pro, Compressor, DVD Studio Pro, FCP, Avid, MPeg Streamclip, etc) if there's a better way to go about it than what I'm doing.

You dont want to concern yourself with file size....its all about time. Thats why bitrates are expressed in increments of time - as in mb per sec. What was your bitrate in Compressor. You need to keep in well under 9.8 mb/s I would make sure you're doing thing correctly before spending money on Bitvice.

DVD is like baking...you need exact proportions or you will screw it up. Firts thing is to start with a 720x480 (4x3 or 16x9 Anamorphic) uncompressed SD file. This is NTSC of course. Next, determin the correct bitrate using a bitrate calculator (do a search for one), then encode.
