Why does Sorenson make MPEG2 files?

If Sorenson Squeeze is such a premium conversion program, why does it convert files destined for DVD to MPEG2 files? So few burning applications seem to recognize/accept MPEG2 files? They want VOB files, etc. Thanks.

DVD only supports MPEG 2 or 1. To make a DVD you bring these MPEG files into an authoring program and it creates VOB files.

But most authoring programs won't accept an MPEG2 file to begin with. They want a MOV file or a VOB file. Ashampoo for instance, a popular DVD burning program that won't accept an MPEG2 file directly.

All DVD authoring tools import MPEG 2. When it ask you for a mov file its just asking for a source they can encode to MPEG 2. Makes it an easy workflow. Ashampoo is just a free crappy burning tool that muxes DVD as well...in the end it encodes your source to MPEG 2. Did you read the link? :)
