We have to create a DVD for a Documentary we just finish, over all is very simple, just chapter menu, some extra features, and audio setup. We were using DVDSP all the time, for our normal projects, client DVDs or presentation and overall work fine. but not totally happy with the quality of the menus.
This time the client will dub 200K copies for distribution. I'm not sure is DVDPS is the right tool for this job. I never work with encore before and need to see if its better or not.
We suggest the client to hire a professional DVD house but they spend all money on finishing, so ask if we can do it. so any direction is very welcome.
We have a HDCAM master on 23.98 FPS and are creating all the artwork on photoshop.
I would say Encore is a sidegrade, quality is going to be the same, both have their strengths, I would recommend buy the other if I were happy with the one I got. You cannot just buy either, they are bundled in the editing suite. So if you don't have it already Encore would cost a good bit of money. The workflow is different but they are both an abstraction layer tool (meaning they do all the heavy coding behind the scenes) Programs like Scenarist is a spec level tool, you can author much cleaner DVDs (faster navigation) but it is expensive and there is a major learning curve. For most DVDs the end user would not notice much of a difference.
The thing that can make a big difference is the encoding. Depending on the bitrate needed Compressor can start to fall apart compared to other software. But with better software also comes a little more learning to finesse.
