How to Increase Space Used On DVD
on Nov 19, 2008 at 5:14:03 pm

Hi all:
I was using Adobe Encore automatice mode, and I think the bit rate was to high at 9mb, kept getting pauses, and skip forwards after the pauses. Troubleshooting this I did several things, changed media, etc. But when burned on Encore auto mod, 95% - 98% of the dvd was used for the file. I adjusted the transcodeing to 1.5-4-7 and now when burned the file looks like a small ring around the center of the dvd approx 30% - 50% use of the total space. What must i tweak to adjust this to spread the file more on the dvd again ? ? My logic is, the more it is spread, the less compress it is, the better the clearity, or something :-)
Thanks - hap

What is your show length? If the bitrate of 9Mbps fit why in the world would you drop it to 4.7 average.

Yes 9Mbps is too high especially on a DVD-R. Drop it to max of 7.5 Mbps / average of 5.5 Mbps / min of 3.5 Mbps. Also using ac3 audio is very important for getting smooth playback.

It does not matter what this covers on the disc.

Thanks for the info, the length is approx 1hr 20mins. Audio options are PCM, DD, or mpeg 4, I started with DD, now I'm trying PCM. . . I'm all ears and Thanks again

1st - stop trying to fill the disc, there is no reason to do this.

DD = Dolby Digital = ac3 - stay with this.

IF you can do a CBR (Constant Bit Rate) at 7 Mbps.

This should give you top quality and good playback.

A good rule of thumb I found on the Adobe site is to divide 560/minutes.

This will give you the encoding rate, assuming AC3 audio. Your 80 minute program comes out as 560/80=7, so use 7.0 for encoding, and use CBR as suggested. At higher bitrates, VBR doesn't help, just takes longer to encode.
