blu ray ...in w 2 feet, or over my head?
on Jan 8, 2008 at 3:00:27 pm

I'm looking back up my files from an HOUR long film. needless to say that's a HUGE task and even worse bc some of the files are WAY over 4.7 gigs. In fact, several are around 17 gigs (whew!)
anyhow, was wondering if anyone had tried using Blu ray ?
Pros cons?
how to connect to a laptop?
I mean i know almost nothing about them at this point, except that they hold 25 beautiful gigs on each disc.
so ... any experience / hints / tips / advice?

What sort of connection does one of these burners take? all the specs say "SATA" but I have yet to see a "sata" port on any computer.

perhaps I just haven't ...yet... bc I'm using a powerbook G4?

Or

perhaps there is some sort of usable converter to turn either USB or Firewire into a SATA connection???

any advice? please?
thank you
-edg

This may be your answer:

http://fastmac.com/

But there are also external BD drives with a FW connection.

And you can use Toast to actually burn the stuff.

I have the Panasonic SW-5582 from OWC at macsales.com. Works on my G5. Toast burns but does not AUTHOR. Searching for an affordable authoring app for the G5 but so far nothing. Maybe The Computer Rockstar will announce DVDSP support on Tues.

Take it EZ,
Robert

Fast Mac is not a solution. Check first http://fastmac.com/blurayfaqs.php under FAQ and you'll see that you can't use it for burning HDV material...
I'm also looking for Blue Ray burner for MAc Pro and FCStudio2, but no luck so far...

Hardware or software? The Panasonic SW-5582 works in my G5 not sure if the door works with it on the Mac Pro. OWC at macsales.com can probably tell you. For authoring using an Intel Mac, you can use Encore CS3 which is part of Adobe Premier Pro CS3.

Have some fun,
Robert

I was looking for BD Burner that will be useful with FCS2 but now, I think I'll need software too.
I can't believe that FCS2 is not good for that!?
