SPRM 14 on an Xbox 360...
on Oct 14, 2007 at 4:01:04 pm

Hello. I am authoring a title that needs to play a different menu and track depending on the aspect ratio that the player is set to. I've created a script that checks SPRM 14 and goes to the widescreen version if it is equal to 3072, otherwise it will play the 4:3 version.

This works great everywhere I've tested it except two places: no matter what aspect my xbox 360 is set to, it plays the 4:3 version; this is also true on a 5 five year-old player that we have at the office.

Is there a more dependable way of checking the apsect?

I need to get this to the replicator ASAP, any help is appreciated.

This problem illustrates how not all DVD players follow the DVD Spec or implement certain features the same way. I would not expect what you are doing to work correctly in 100% of DVD players because not all players use the SPRMs in precisely the same way.

Most Hollywood film DVDs have widescreen menus with the text, buttons and major graphic elements restricted to the center 4x3 area. That way the menus play correctly no matter what aspect monitor the player is connected to without needing to test the SPRMs.

Why bother with that- just go 16:9 anamorphic and it will play correctly on all players no scripting needed.

Thank you for your input. I am rethinking this and will probably take Noah's advice... it's just a shame you can't use the wider screen when you are designing menus.

Sure you can- 16:9 screens will be auto letterboxed on 4:3 displays. It looks great. Designing for 16:9 is the bomb.

Unfortunately, I need the 4:3 stuff to be full-frame, not letterboxed on this particular project, so I redesigned the menus to work in 16:9 and also when cropped to 4:3. But at least it works consistently now.

Thanks agin.

Flag your 16x9 footage as pan-and-scan. I think that's your best solution. This way the player will crop the 16x9 to 4:3 on NTSC monitors.
