Audio DVD compression-how many times?
on Jun 5, 2006 at 4:36:52 pm

I gave client a DVD with everything except narration. They returned another DVD with narration and music mixed. I still need to make video changes and will need to import the audio. Will then need to author & burn the master DVD. How many times can you compress to DVD? Bad idea?

You can do it as many times as you want but you're halving the quality each time. Getting the originals would be a great idea.

[Bonnie1100] "How many times can you compress to DVD?"

Depends of the format of the audio. If the DVD's audio is in PCM (a.k.a. wav) format it is essentially uncompressed. You can bring that audio back into your editor and be unconcerned about multiple passes. If the audio is mpeg or ac3 (dolby) then, as you assumed, bad idea. In that case have the client send you the audio track they put on the DVD.
