Any DVD Authoring apps that can lock out remote for Kiosk use?
on May 22, 2006 at 10:17:24 am

I'm putting a DVD together for a zoo and they don't want the kids to press "play" then press another button on the remote to go another chapter or back to the menu. Is there any good app that can "lock-out" the controls when a chapter is selected. I've looked through DVD Workshop and Encore and can't find any joy there.

Author your DVD in your regular Authoring package, and burn the DVD Folders to your hard drive.

Then open the DVD with PGCedit. Double-click the Title in the left pane (you can verify the title by single-clicking it, then hitting the EYE icon along the toolbar to preview the title). Then in the top-left area of the popup window, you will see "Prohibited User Operations" -- click the little box with the 3 dots on it, and a new window pops up for you to designate which operations to block. Save it, and you are on your way...

Do a Trial run on a test DVD (or backup DVD Folder) to see if it works for you...

Regards,
George

I'll give that a go George. Thanks for the tip.

Can't the player be tucked into a locked box so that there is no way to reach the buttons?

Hi Noah,

Nah, the box idea won't work as there are five interviews and the user need interactive access via the remote. The zoo doesn't want the kids pressing a different buton if they get bored with an interview after 5 seconds. They want them to watch the whole one minute interview section/video, then it reverts to menu.

Cheers,
Peter

Still not clear why the kids would have the remote. Of course they're going to hit all of the buttons and not pay attention. There's a bit of design issue here beyond the tech one.

Encore allows you to disable any or all menu funtions when playing a "timeline" as Encore calls each PGC. Other apps probably allow this as well. I'm not in front of Encore at the moment, but it's the "User Operations" tab somewhere that would control what is locked out.

Have fun!

Rob
