Hi,
this is silly question but I will ask anyway:
Would HD DVD data disk be able to play back on current DVD players??

Hi Jiri, the answer is no... Everyone will have to get new DVD players. It will be well worth it...

On another note, HD DVD will be able to play legacy DVDs, but it appears that Blu Ray will not...

So David, since Panasonic and Sony are "BLUE",which Way do You think the Video Industry goes, especially if Intel and Microsoft like the HD DVD??
Personally I find both formats to be great for archiving.

It all depends on which way the consumers go. This is basiically a big bet with some putting thier chips on RED and some putting them on BLACK.

Jiri,

Assuming both types of HD DVDs work as touted, the companies that give the players away at a very low price will probably win the battle. In the long haul, it not the players that generate the most capital, its the software. I'm betting on Sony, but I wouldn't bet my future on it...

David are you sure blu won't playback standard DVD's?

That would be a major deal breaker for folks looking
for compatibility of their older discs.

I recently posted pics here of pioneer's first blu-ray
pc drive and it can read/write all formats but cannot
write to CD-R in its current form.

Chris,

I read an article just a few days ago that spelled out the mjaor differences, and that was the most glaring one they mentioned. Its very possible that the guy who wrote the article got that wrong. I'd imagine that would be a deal breaker for many people.

It will be fun to see the train wreck as long as I don't buy the wrong train.

I've read that either format will be able to read current DVDs. (For example, http://news.com.com/FAQ+HD+DVD+vs.+Blu-ray/2100-1041_3-5886956.html)

A pox on all their greedy hearts. I'm still trying to decide whether I like the #2 pencil or that new-fangled mechanical kind with the skinny lead.
