DVR-109...anyone try reading DVD-RAM media?
on Apr 21, 2005 at 12:23:23 am

I've just replaced my old panasonic LFD-311 DVD-RAM/DVD-R drive
with a shiny new Pioneer 109 drive.

I updated the firmware right off the bat as it had a very old
version than offered now.

I could not get the drive to read my DVD-RAM discs (acts like there is no disc inserted)
but if I installed the DVD-RAM driver that came with the panasonic
than it could read them (I had uninstalled the DVD-RAM driver because I didn't think I'd need it)

It was an OEM bare drive and came with nothing, but it burns just fine with the new version
of NERO.

So my question is, how the heck are other people supposed to be able to read DVD-RAM
media as the drive is listed as capable, if no DVD-RAM drivers come with it?

I thought this was something it would do in hardware.

I'm running windows 2000.

I've never seen anywehere in the specs for the 109 that it is able to read DVD-RAM discs. I know of very few DVD-R or +R burners that can. You normally need a seperate DVD-RAM drive in order to read and burn those discs.

Looks like the 109XL drive will read RAM discs...or is supposed to at least...but not just the standard 109.

This is weird.

I got a smart-assed reply from pioneer support that it would read
a DVD-RAM (with data) but not a blank disc....well...duh... on that one.

but strangely it WILL NOT read my DVD-RAM discs unless I've
got that system driver installed that came with my panasonic.

Maybe they are assuming I'm running XP, which I'm not (win2k)
and that has a built in DVD-RAM file system reader.

I dunno.

at least it works. I guess I should be content with that.
