Tips on filming Concerts
on Nov 30, 2015 at 6:44:43 pm

Hello,
I'm just curious what some tips are for filming concerts.
Should I go with auto white balance? The stage lights often change rapidly.
Should I set my canon xa20 to aperture mode that lets me adjust the f-stop but that automatically adjusts the shutter or should I use it in full manual? Someone I know films with the Auto Focus on at Fast Auto Focus rather than manual.

I would say pick a white balance ahead of time, during rehearsal, and lock it in. The colors are *supposed* to change during the show.

Use manual focus with the option of the momentary quick-focus button. Manual Iris.

Pre-jam all your cameras to the same time of day free-run time code.

Get good back-up audio into each camera.

Before the show, have each camera shoot the same color bar or chip chart, under the existing lighting. Use this to help grad the cams in post. Camera-generated bars are not the same.

What do I do about 100 IRE? I can set the zebras on my cameras but if the lights are constantly changing won't it sometimes go over 100? There is no rehearsal it's a small time concert in a venue. Open Mic style

Well that's not cool... better to under-expose and bring it up in the color grade, than blow out and lose all detail, so, Bring the iris down a little bit overall. Still keep it manual, though. I usually run zebras at 90 to give me warning.
