Camera Recommendations ....... small form Camera
on Apr 11, 2013 at 5:05:54 pm

Hi everyone :

So Many cameras out there my head id spinning. Im in the market for a small form camera with proper 1080p 422 out that can use PL lenses with an adapter for short form DOC/Interviews.

Will be using a PIX240i with it .... so i can get Prores or DNX files. I looked at the F3 (GREAT images) but i think its way to expensive for its features at the moment. for 13K i may as well get a scarlet.

Looked at the D800 (i AM getting one) but my problem with shooting video is the Zoom lenses and my Matte box situation. I'm getting a RED 18-85 lens so i wont have to be swapping out glass.

Yes i need timecode as well .... love my hacked GH2 but not for these projects .... dont need that stress. What Do you guys suggest ?

Hi Nigel,

Have you seen the recent announcement about the Black Magic 4k camera?

http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicproductioncamera4k

If you can wait until July, it looks like a great solution. I was on a set with their current camera and I thought the output and form was just excellent. It held its own against an Alexa A-cam.

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Nigel,

I know you mentioned small form factor but as another option, I've seen some red ones changing hands at affordable prices on reduser.net. I saw someone selling a (well used) red one MX body for $2000 the other day. You probably have many of the accessories you woud need for a shooting kit. I wish I had made an offer for it :)

Cheers,

Paul

Nigel - would you consider a used F3 with S-Log for $7200?

If not, the $1298 GH3 has timecode - but its output is 4:2:0, sadly.

The BMCC is also starting to become available. You can get one new in an unopened box from a private party for $2935, or you can get one brand new from Adorama for $2995

Hope this is helpful,

Bill
