Making a short Trailer on Blackscreen -- Words Fading In/Out

Not sure if this is the right forum. If not, please forgive.

I want to do a teaser, kind of an intro, to alert about a film I will make, but which i haven't even started shooting.

I want a completely black/red background (if animated, such as with smoke, better but not a must) on which white-font words will be fading-in and out(or animated otherwise), giving way to others, PLUS background music/sound which is continuous (I have the MP3/Wav files already). I've seen them often in films, just before they start ..or as trailers.

I tried MSPowerpoint and similar programs but they too have their problems. Once I got so close and got the slides all pretty and then when I uploaded the MP3 music, it only played for the duration of a slide, replayed same thing on change of the slide and so on.

Questions is: What's a free, easy to use, software or source to pull this off if I don't want to go all the deeper Video editing way like thru Adobe Premier, A.E etc?

Altitude is not all the problem. Taking steps is more of it.

Lightworks will probably have enough text control for you to do what you need. If you find free stock footage of smoke then you can tint it without the need to generate it from scratch using After Effects.

Lightworks is free, and very in depth, but will limit some of your import/export settings.

Any free editing app bundled with the computer can do this effect and synch it to your music. In Apple computers, use imovie, in PC's look for Windows Moviemaker.
