How to shoot real powder?
on Mar 7, 2013 at 8:42:58 pm

I've been trying to get a shot of rock climbing chalk floating in the air. I had tried to shoot into the sun, to get that golden ring around the particles, without much success. Andrew Kramer has a video on filming flour particles for later AE uses. However you have to shoot indoor.

So, any advise?

Tkx!

You saying it has to be outdoors? You could try shooting it against black, with heavy side-lighting, then compositing that as a key into outdoor footage. There is also stock footage of dust puffs and the like from various sources, Digital Juice would be one, there are others.

Yes, it's a climbing video. I was hoping to get it without post. But alas...

Your instincts are correct in that you must back light the powder. However, the powder must have a contrasting background so try to shoot it over some shadowed rocks or dark clothing.

Best of luck!
