How to shoot a FLY's POV?
on Jan 31, 2013 at 7:12:38 pm

I've been asked to shoot a shot lasting around 60 seconds of a fly buzzing around a kitchen from the fly's POV.

Anyone done anything like this or have any tips on how to approach it.

As yet the shooting format is open.

Fisheye lens, hand-held cam, then, apply the insect eyes effect from Apple motion.

Never done it (or had need to, nor probably ever will)....

But I'd shoot a lightweight handheld format, something I could whip around easily and fast... fisheye lens (probably 6mm or wider).

And lots of speed ramps in post... you could never move a camera nearly as fast or as nimble as a fly.

And of course if you're talking about an actual fly's view, it's field of vision would be somethign akin to this...

...which would be done in post. Although I think there are some lenses (or more likely front-of-lens attachments) that will do that.

Sounds perfect for a GoPro with a handle mounted on top so the fly can land and take off. Shoot at a higher frame rate for smoother speed ramps.

Best of luck!

Well, the story is everything!

If there's space in the story, it would be funny to have a cutaway of the fly with a GoPro mounted to its little tiny helmet.

if you have no budget:

Go pro (or similar)+Steadicam Merlin

If you have a budget:

Alexa+mkv alien revolution

It would be great to see this shot on the Alexa and mkv revolution, but I have a feeling the client will go for the GoPro route. Thanks all.

I own both an Alexa and a GoPro. Each tool has its place and this screams small camera. Think of the interesting place the "fly" could go if it were small. With well place speed ramps and cuts it could be pretty cool. Just try to make the camera look like its "flying" not hand held.

Best of luck!
