Stolen Electronics?

I originally posted this in the Event Videography forum, and I was encouraged to post this here also...

I came across someone selling a used HD video camera and a 100GB Firestore for a VERY reasonable price, considering the current asking prices that I have seen on eBay, Amazon, craigslist and the like. The price is so good, that I wonder if the merchandise is hot! Is there a way to check this out prior to purchase, so that I don't land myself into hot water later, when I try to get service or insurance?

Thanks in advance to all who respond!

I would ask for a serial number (preferably a close up photo) of the camera and FS as well as a copy of any purchase receipts if they have them. Chances are if the products are hot, you wont here from them again.

Thanks, Frank, I appreciate the response. Even if they do give me the serial numbers, how would I be able to investigate if they were hot?

Most thieves would not give you serial numbers especially if you ask for them by saying you want to check the stolen items database. A legitimate seller would usually be happy to oblige.
Here are a couple of websites you can check and you may want to just type the serial number and make and model into google and see if anything comes up.

That's great information! Thanks, again, Frank!

Certainly, I don't expect it be stolen, but I just want to protect myself. I plan on insuring the equipment, once I get it, so I don't want to run into any issues down the road.
