I'm looking to buy a good training DVD (preferably) or book about achieving cinematic lighting for the digital independent filmmaker.

What do you guys recommend?
Thanks.

Hi Anderson,

There are several very good books out there .... if you head over to the ASC website (http://www.theasc.com/) you'll find a store section, with lots of different types of books. I was partial to Motion Picture and Video Lighting as well as Cinematography, Theory and Practice. Look at all the offerings and see which suits you best. One type of book isn't necessarily good for all, depending on your learning style :)

As always, practice, practice, practice is always the best teacher!

Here's a link from cinematography.com -- their 'best of' list.

I'd recommend "Lighting" by Blain Brown. Excellent overview of the whole subject, a great nuts n bolts read about the technology, the tools, and strategies, with diagrams and examples. Includes a DVD illustrating the key concepts as well. Great book.

His other book "Cinematography" is another excellent resource -- very current and includes many chapters regarding shooting digital.

The lighting forum (all the forums, actually) on cinematography.com is always full of good info, often from seasoned veterans. Throw any specific questions you might have out on there and you're sure to get helpful replies.

Hope this helps out. Like Tess mentioned though, the best teacher is practice and the confidence that comes with knowing your tools.

Rugged yet hygienic.

I can second those recommendations as well ... both are excellent books! And Blain Brown sometimes gives lectures in the LA area if he's not working! A big plus :)) As John mentions, the forums here and at cinematography.com are incredible resources -- working DP's at high levels tend to answer and be involved. My experience in all of these forums has been nothing short of positive - no being looked down upon for asking newbie type questions - everyone is very helpful and willing to share.

Good luck to you Anderson!

I would recommend: 'Lighting for Digital Video & Television' by John Jackman.
