Help With Lavalier Mics....Will They Work With My Camera?
on Jan 31, 2009 at 5:23:43 am

Hi Guys!

First off I appreciate all the help I have gotten from this forum.

I do have one question about getting a mic for my camera. I want to have clear audio by having a clip on mic (i.e lavalier).

I have a Cannon FS 100 which has a yellow audio jack hole.

The lavalier I am looking at is

My question: How does this hook up to the camera? I don't see any audio jack that fits.

I just don't understand how this would hook up to the camera and I would love if you could clarify this issue for me.

Many thanks.

Anthony

That's the wrong rig to use with a camera, unless your camera is stationary and you can park the receiver right next to you.

As it is, you cannot plug it into your camera since the kit comes with an XLR, not a mini-stereo jack. You can buy an adapter (I think this will work: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/133528-REG/Comprehensive_XLRJ_MP_3EXF...)for around $9.

You might want to consider this radio mic which is designed to use with a consumer camera: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=NavBar&A=getItemDetail&Q=...

You can also spend many hundreds of dollars more for a better mic. Those will all come with XLR plugs but the above cheap adapter will work just fine, I believe.

Hey Rick

Thanks for your most detailed post.

Really cleared things up for me. I ordered both things right away.

Thanks so much for your time. It made a real difference!

Many thanks Rick!

Cheers!
Anthony

You ordered "both things"???? Why? The radio mic for consumer cameras does not need the XLR to mini jack adapter.

Oh I guess I misread what you posted.

I didn't notice that I wouldn't need the converter with the microphone you suggested.

No worries, it was only $15.

Thanks again!
