How to create Daylight with fake windows ?
on Sep 15, 2008 at 2:30:01 pm

I'm shooting a spot that happens in several rooms.
The set is already built (it's a furniture store with display rooms).
Their rooms have some windows installed, but they are "Fake",
with plates bolted to the wall and no way of placing any "normal" light source behind the windows, or removing the window covering.

I'm looking for a solution for that - creating the illusion that
some daylight is entering. Besides light boxes, are there any other solutions ? Every creative suggestion (even placing light from a different direction) will be welcomed.

cheers
Billet

Is there any budget for doing this in post?

-On the cheap end you can do it with the shine plugin+AE. If no tracking is involved it should be not too complicated to pull off.

-On the high end if you have a tracking shot you can 3D model the windows and post light.

Hope this helps a little.

I'm wondering if it is possible to get above the walls with a light.

I'm thinking of two ways, and without seeing the scene I'm guessing. the first way would be to put a light above the walls and shoot a tasteful cucoloris of a window on the wall.
The other is to add reflective material in the window, over the glass or whatever is there. Then shoot an HMI into it, presumably casting light as if from the window. that is if you are not seeing a lot of the window.

I hope that you can figure something out, and that my brainstorming helps

Really hard to design it without seeing it. Perhaps bouncing light off the window is the way to go. I drew a quick sketch if you email me I'll send it to you. It's a place to start anyway. richardmherd@yahoo.com
