Telecine without a telecine. . . is this right?

Someone told me that this actually works... it sounds shady, but I gotta ask. It's been a while since I've been behind a camera.

Goal: a VERY cheap, low quality way of getting old black & white 8mm film footage into an Avid Media Composer

step 1: 8mm film projector plays at 24fps
step 2: shoot the screen with any video camera that can capture at 24p
step 3: digitize

Naaa, 'can't be that easy? You'd at least have to sync the two, right?

Yes, you can do that. you will get sync. but the contrast ratio of the images or the quality will not be as great as a TK. Still try it, if you are happy with the quality, whats the harm.

its funny because about 10 years ago I did exactly the same in college, in order for me to be able to cut my short in on-campus Avid (pretty big thing back then) I projected my bolex-filmed film and shot it with a Beta SP camera (60i of course) and then digitized it. It worked out well for me as the content of the film didn't require to be perfectly in sync.
