Where can I find LED tubes like these?

hey

Iv had a search for LED tubes/Battery Powered LED tubes but cant seem to find anything.

the best example is this music video.

You will see them about 20 seconds in for most of the video.

there is a circle version and normal long tubes.

they might be just glow in the dark lights, but seem quite bright, so Im thinking LED strips.

also around the 1:30 mark, you see her holding the circular one and it looks like there is a clip at the bottom, which id guess is the battery power?

any help would be great as we want to use them in some of our videos.

thanks.

I think the straight one is just a standard fluorescent tube. It might have an ND sleeve over it to knock down the brightness and possible is gelled as well. but the size looks standard.

The circle I'm less sure of. It does NOT look like a hula hoop that someone stuffed with LEDs to me. I'd expect bright specs where the led elements were inside the tube.

It looks very even like gas filled circle.

Piece of neon maybe? The artist is treading it kinda gingerly, not tossing it around like a hula hoop. So if it's glass - that might be why.

I looked for the join point to see if there was a power supply but and never saw a shot of it. So no help there.

My off the top of my head thoughts. Anyone else?

I don't know about the ring light, but it's possible that the tube might be one of these:

I would bet that the LED tube light could also be made into a ring light as well, so there might be something like that out there.

Here's a possibility for the hoop:

The trick would be to shoot at an exposure which blows out the individual LEDs into a continuous neon look.

Nice find, Joe.

I think I'll bookmark that.

Appreciate the search work.

Thanks Bill - I figured with all the forward motion and radical changes going on in the lighting world (CFLs that actually match daylight, high-power LEDs, etc.) that there must have been something I hadn't an inkling of.

It's funny - I was a photographer for Hearst at the CNN Presidential Debates in 2007, and was shooting some background shots of the setup. The CNN set:

...which you can see in the background of a shot of Wolf Blitzer on the above link, was completely Duratrans wrapped boxes with an industrial size CFL bulb inside. At the time I had never seen a CFL bulb of that size, and was amazed that CNN was using such a technology. It was an immense wall behind the candidates, and very impressive looking. The only downside to CFLs is their fragility, but of course CNN had road cases even for the bulbs!

that was all really helpful, just need to find the equivalent in the UK now haha.

I found this DIY solution that i might try out as it will be a fraction of the price.

thanks again

Hey John -

Here are some hoop suppliers in the UK. Don't know if they'll have what you want, but they're there:

I just did a Google search on "optical fiber hoop in UK", and found them.

The colored LED lights and strip lights can be found at http://www.myledlightsource.com/types-of-led-lights/colored-led-lights-stri... . LED lights will have the basic colors Red, green and blue. The difference in intensity can bring a variety of colors in the LED lights. They are not expensive, you can buy a colored LED light at 20$ to 30$. The outdoor lights can cost up to 50$ and not more than that cost.
