Advice for shooting with ceiling light
on Feb 27, 2012 at 8:15:50 am

Hi,
my new project is shooting some tutorial video about piano and organs.
but I'm beginner for lighting.
I worked 4-5 years for live event or location interview (with 1-2 or less portable led light)
and new project is shoot in showroom.

showroom is not too dark but I think I need some lighting
I don't need dramatic lighting with depth.
but it's kind of tutorial, so I want simple clean look without least shadow

and because it's showroom, many halogen in-wall type lights is on ceiling. (2700-3000k)
and no natural light. I think I must use ceiling lights

what kind of lighting are you recommend?
and can I use them with ceiling lights?

You have several things to light: the piano itself, which needs a broad white panel of light to create the specular highlight in it's shiny finish that shows off it's contours and helps define shape.

the keyboard, which is high contrast white and black, and where you don't want much shadow...

...and the player/instructor, who needs a key and fill light.

A ceiling bounce along isn't going to cover all of this. Smal lights int he ceilign alone are not going to do this job either. To do it *right*, you are going to need to rent or buy more instruments.

Thanks Mark.
I didn't think I can shoot with ceiling light only.
of course, I think about rental lighting gear.
and most angles will focus only organ's key and switched, handles, pedals.
