Vertical Video / Media Composer First Workflow?
on Jun 16, 2020 at 10:47:06 am

As a longtime user of Media Composer, I'm finding the learning curve for First to be surprisingly steep. Hopefully someone can help me out here.

I have a bunch of 9:16 vertical video clips which I need to make into a 9:16 edited file

Having eventually linked the MP4 clips in Source Browser (no mean feat in itself) with the MediaReactor plugin, I've figured out how to rotate the clips in Source Settings / Frame Flex but can't seem to change the project to anything but the default 16:9.

What am I missing here?

What's the target for?
Just curious if its for digital signage or IG.
In the past I've had to bring in final output to AE, rotate, then AME for delivery.
I don't recall Avid deviating from broadcast/film aspect ratio of late.

You need to create a custom project raster dimension. You can do that in regular MC but I think first is restricted to 16:9

Thanks Pat.

Someone else has suggested that a 9:16 file is effectively just 16:9 on its side counterclockwise, so if you shoot vertical and edit with a stiff neck, a 16:9 sideways file will work?

Yes I was going to suggest that but I'm not sure there are many apps that can rotate the content for you.
I have regular MC so would happily rotate the content and re export if you want to send a sample.

If it`s already shot 9:16, do you need to rotate anything? Imports the clips on their side.

Mixing in other aspect ratios is the sticking point, but as this is all shot for Insta, it's not a problem for this project.

Thankyou for the offer though.

If the upload process can rotate then that's fine but the upload may just scale and or mask crop.
You output will be 1920 wide 1080 tall. But the uploaded will be unaware of the rotated content.
Do a test is best.
