AAF Export Issues
on Dec 30, 2019 at 8:36:24 pm

I had to ask this again in a new post.
This is for the Resolve to Avid adventurers.
For some weird reason, using the Avid AAF export from Resolve 14 spits out media but no AAF file?
This happens when I try to export a full feature-length set at 2K DCI.
But if I set it a smaller portion you can see the AAF file as well as media?
What gives?
I have tried this three times (4.5 hours each render).
I don't see any errors in the render queue.
The worst-case scenario is to render it in small bites and put it together in Avid.

Anyone?

So on the DELIVERY page you choose AVID AAF? You didn't just choose to EXPORT that from one of the menus, but did use the DELIVERY page, right?

OH, sorry, I see now that you did. So...1920x1080 it'll do this file, but 2k DCI, no dice?

No, both formats didn't work.
I found the culprit.
The drives were new and I didn't add to the Media list.
The last crash resulted in a pop-up error regarding write permissions.
After I added the drive the render was 12 hours and not 4.5.
I guess it finally finished the whole film.

I got the AAF to finally export but the results in Avid is pure poop :P
Files are missing from the timeline but they show up in the bins and the audio section is a complete mess.
It seems to be on a different framerate but nothing that makes sense.
The audio ends almost 10m later than the actual pic edit.
No clips are aligned.
This is not the same case in Resolve.

And that dreaded PMM_INSUFFICIENT_MEDIA error keeps me from going forward :P

I've updated to R16.x (latest) and I am still having issues exporting AAFs and into Avid.
I at least figured out the video part in Avid but the audio is still a mystery.
I mentioned that audio was not lining up and looked way out of sync some even cut shorter.
Well, the fix (for now)is to make sure to render the amount channels needed.
However now the other issue is that my WAV fiiles are not retaining their TapeID with that setting.
I tried using filename>sourcename and it spits out a different name system and without the metadata no chance of relinking to original WAV.
Testing again and using suffix for filename.
Has anyone very succesfully exported an AAF from Resolve to Avid?
My last attempt will be from original NLE XML to ProTools then export to AAF or OMF.
Crossing fingers :P

I do seem to remember an issue in earlier Resolve versions where you had to push the "AVID AAF" preset everytime you did an output as well.
If you had two sequences you wanted to output, and pressed Avid AAF for the first one, output it, and then left your settings alone, and called up another sequence, or added multple timelines to the delivery page before a batch output, if you didn't hit that button for each timeline, you wouldn't get the aaf file...just the rendered media.

I dont' use this workflow anymore, so i'm not sure if that has since been fixed, or what versions it used to happen in.

Thanks, I found that out the hard way after the 6th time trying.
I can see why you abandoned this process.
Ive been working on this for days now and nothing works.
Ive tried every angle using FCPX. Premiere, XtoCC, X2Pro, Resolve 14-16.x and Avid.
My last hope is to just re-render all audio clips (biggest issue) from Premiere during AAF export.
I will give OMF a try too and later add Pro Tools or Logic a go with it.
The main issue I have now is that I cant get any of the WAV files to relink in Avid.
I can do the RED and other video footage to link but not audio.
The original audio NAME comes up as shot/take in the NAME column.
But I can see the actual filename in the TapeID column in Avid.
Its 2020 and I cant believe I am still dealing with audio issues in all these NLEs :P

After numerous attempts at different workflows, I finally figured out the root of all my issues with using AAFs from Premiere to Avid.
For some weird reason, FCPX (assembly edit) had half the WAV files in Dolby 5.1.
I had to strip all Dolby files down to mono channels.
Basically one by one in FCPX.
Then exported XM, use XtoCC and import in Premiere.
From there I had no issues ever.
But to get it to work in Avid I had to add Pro Tools in the middle.
Exported an AAF with MXF and voila!!
All opened fine in Avid MC.
I could try and relink but all channels are intact and really don't need to add any more stress.
If I have time I will try and open that AAF into Resolve and see if the AAF export works here but I have to move on.
