Transcode Issues
on Nov 24, 2017 at 4:36:33 pm

I was trying to find a quicker solution to transcoding a 20 day RED HELIUM shoot.

First attempt was RESOLVE 12.5 using AVID AAF. 92 clips took about 2.4 hours.

I ran into an issue with the MXFs in AVID due to a bug in RESOLVE using the AUDIO SYNC option.

So I went and did the same 92 clip transcode in AVID.

Well that was taking way too long and gave up after 4 hours and only 6 clips to show for.

I did some digging around and noticed that the transcode was correct but the sizing was the same.

From RESOLVE I chose 1080p HD.

I thought AVID transcode would take the PROJECT SETTINGS as file size?

I am using MC 8.9.3. If anyone has any tips on this please send.

Another issue is when using AUDIO SYNC in AVID, some of the clips would be shorter in time length.

This is with the original LINKED RED files. Same issues with the RESOLVE export.

Its all moot anyways since those shortened files didn't SYNC correctly.

I really would have liked to do the AUDIO SYNC in RESOLVE then export to AVID AAF.

I also found a bug from RESOLVE. If you dont select the AUDIO option in AVID AAF & MXF, the AAF file does not export a timeline. Your stuck with a folder full of MXFs.

All these issues were non existent in the past using AVID MC 8.4 and RESOLVE 12.5.

But that was with RED MX and REDONE files.

I prefer syncing in Media Composer only because you get all the metadata and ability to sync by 1/4 frame. But I just did post a blog on using Resolve to sync dailies only for the metadata, and still use Media Composer for import/sync of WAV files.

See: http://24p.com/wordpress/?p=372

As far as transcode in Media Composer, you need to set MC up to transcode to project settings when linked. Also, MC will default to FULL debayer so make sure you are at 1/2 or even 1/4 for doing HD proxies for dailies.

Thanks, Michael gonna read your blog asap!
The 1/4 frame is that the perf workflow?
Of the 2000 plus clips, I think maybe 80% synced in Avid using timecode.
The rest will be done by hand.
In the end, I had to use Resolve for the MXF export.
My tests on both platforms didn't quite work well.
Using both PC/Mac Resolve 12.5, I manage to export them all in less than 4 days.
And they seem to play nice on both sides.
The only crappy thing is that Resolve Audio Sync and Avid export didnt work in Avid.
The video part came in but the audio was causing errors during playback.

Such is life ☺

Thanks again!

Yes, the audio media would be imported into a 35mm/4 perf project type to get access to 1/4 frame resyncing capabilities. See my blog on that topic here:

http://24p.com/wordpress/?p=16

Also, I don't trust any audio via AAF back from Resolve. If you do create VA dailies in Resolve, then use the importing of the msmMMOB.mdb file to create master clips. Do not import AAF to create the master clips.

The method I outlined in my previous link was using Resolve to create the sync relationship as metadata, then actually sync clips in Media Composer based on the timecode reference made in Resolve based on waveform sync which Media Composer does not have for AutoSync.

Thanks again Michael.

The MXF exports from Resolve will be used for assembly in Avid.
Audio will be synced in Avid as well.
However, I was planning on exporting the AAF back into Resolve for color but switch to the Helium files.
Would that be problematic with the audio?
I don't plan on bringing the audio back to Resolve maybe a simple guide track.

A Video only AAF will be fine back to Resolve.

[Michael Phillips] "A Video only AAF will be fine back to Resolve. "

Thanks, Michael!
I did an extensive test with my Resolve MXF to Avid MC workflow.
I took the MXF files, synced audio then placed in a sequence.
Did that with a few odd files not from the same day folder.
Exported AAF linke to media option and boom!
Works in Resolve nicely.
Now I didnt bother to try and relink the audio in Resolve since that goes to another set of hands anyway.
I sure hope by the time I get this project back from the Director (he's doing assembly) all the bugs with RED Helium files are resolved (pardon the pun) :)
