Hello!

I've got a short to cut that was shot on a Canon 5D. The mov files are h264 1920x1080 45mbits/s data rate 23.976. Not sure if it's 8-bit or 10-bit and the drive is not with me right now. Don't know if a Canon 5D can even do 10-bit unless it's hacked to shoot raw files.

What should I transcode them to in Avid to keep the same quality so as to possibly be able to just use an export as the final file rather than have to relink to the camera originals? I don't know if that even matters but I thought it would keep things easier if I can just export the final cut rather than have someone have to relink for coloring and all that. Would DNxHD 115 be fine for this?

Thanks!

Those H.264 files are 8-bit.

DNxHD 145

DNx145 would be better, more information.

If your footage is 23.976 from the camera, then your only choice is DNxHD 115 as 145 if for 30fps frame rates, but they are the same data rate "family" that Shane is suggesting.

RIGHT! 145 is 29.97! DNx175 is for 23.98...so you can also use that.

I would say use DNX-175X even though the Camera originals are 8bit.
175X files are the same size as 175 files and if you use 175X for all your graphics and effects they will hold up better.
