Outputting Edl drop frame with Avid Edl Manager
on Mar 28, 2017 at 2:11:10 am

Hi all,

First time posting in this forum (though I've been using it as a resource for some time now, so thank you!), so please forgive me if I don't have it all down pat.

Working on Media Composer version 8.
We work with non-drop frame sequences and I regularly make non-drop frame edls with no issue, but now I'm trying to make a drop frame edl and I can't seem to get it to do that. I tried changing the sequence to drop frame timecode, and the edl says FCM Drop Frame, but it still also says FCM Non-Drop Frame, and it looks like it's non-drop (showing : vs ; plus I'm not seeing any dropped frames etc).

Is there some step I'm missing?

Thanks in advance!

Typically you will see an FCP command for the record side, then for the source which is what you are probably seeing. Is this still using the standalone EDL Manager?

Thank you Michael.
Oh, I see. So it is telling me that the source is drop frame, but what it is outputting (recording?) is non-drop frame.
So I need to get it to record drop frame. I set the "Record TC" to "30DF", but it still doesn't give me the drop frame time.

Yes, I am using the standalone EDL Manager from Avid.

Thanks
Le

I can't remember the order if the first FCP is for the record side or the second one. But if you have both listed it seems to me that it is doing the right thing. I will look at how 8.8 behaves and let you know.

In MC 8.8 with the embedded list tool, I made a 3 event EDL with a drop frame timecode sequence as 29.97i
First source event is NDF
Second source event is DF
Third source event is NDF

TITLE: Untitled Sequence.01
FCM: DROP FRAME
000001 FORS0001_02 V C 01:16:05:03 01:21:53:18 01:00:00:00 01:05:48:25
000002 FORS0001_01 V C 03:08:37:15 03:14:40:26 01:05:48:25 01:11:52:06
000003 FORS0001_02 V C 01:14:40:26 01:21:53:18 01:11:52:06 01:19:05:14

And while the numbers are correct, the second event does not come across as DF as there is no FCM command nor ; in the timecode fields. Something to contact Avid about and get their thoughts on the matter.

Interesting.
This is what it gives me:

FCM: DROP FRAME
FCM: NON-DROP FRAME

* FROM CLIP NAME: 1.1.111.MOV
002 1.1.112. V C 01:00:00:00 02:02:43:06 02:03:06:21 03:05:53:19
* FROM CLIP NAME: 1.1.112.MOV
003 1.1.113. V C 01:00:00:00 02:02:47:14 03:05:53:19 04:08:44:27

That EDL looks correct. First FCM defines the record side which does not change, and the second one defines the source side assuming that all the sources are NDF. In my example, with mixed sources DF/NDF it does not seem to flag to the DF clip properly.

Oh, I though the first FCM referenced the source, since my sequence is set to drop frame...?

In your example the three sources were in the same sequence? How do you change the source of the actual clip?

Thanks again for your help.

If I recall, the first FCM command defines the record side, then, if different, the second one defines the source. In my example, with mixed sources, it does not seem to indicate that the second event is drop frame. So something strange going on there either by FCM or by ; or : in the timecode.

You change timecode by clicking in the START field for that clip and entering a new value. Or use of the AuxTC columns to track a different timecode if needed, including DF or NDF.

So now I'm really baffled. I tried another sequence from a different project, which was initially also non-drop and changed the sequence to drop frame and the edl manager worked as expected, it produced a drop frame edl. So of course I tried my other sequence again, thinking that I got edl manager to "snap back in", but nothing doing, still giving me the non-drop frame.

AuxTC sounds interesting, I'll need to look into that. Don't think that would help with this though, if changing the entire sequence doesn't help.
