Shooting 23.98/delivering in 29.97

Been running into this a lot and was wondering if anyone could help me out. I've been dealing with a lot of footage coming back that's shot in 23.98 but needs to be delivered in 29.97. Is there a proper way to cut a spot in 23.98 in the AVID, then convert it to 29.97?

How will you be delivering this? Output to tape? Digital file? Does it need to be 29.97 interlaced (preferrable) or 29.97 progressive?

Is ALL of your footage 23.98, or is there some 29.97 mixed in?

Thanks for the response! Digital file. Progressive. Yes, all the footage is 23.97.

Progressive...that's a bitch. Nothing you can do but cut the 23.98 into a 29.97 progressive project and have repeated frames. On the footage with less motion you can add a time warp and toggle FLUID MOTION, that will create in between frames. But if you have a lot of motion going on in the shot, or fast motion, it'll produce large artifacts around the movement. So for that you'll just have to have repeated frames.

Sucks, but I've been there.

okay. Well, it is what it is. Good to know this. Just curious though, would it be easier or less complicated to deliver it 29.97i?

VERY! This is how film is telecined to tape...pulldown is added. The extra frames are spread out into fields of 29.97 interlaced. You can look up PULLDOWN in the wikipedia if you like. But this is tons easier, and looks tons better. BUT...it all depends on the client. Mine lately are only taking 1080p29.97 and 1080p23.98, because they also stream the broadcast shows on the web. Complicates things.

I have same situation. I cut everything in Avid, 23.98, export SAS, use After Effects to do the pulldown (WWSSW) to 29.97i to deliver for Broadcast. Extreme Reach will not accept embedded Closed Captions in 23.98p - that's why I must got to 29.97i. I then can deliver MPEG2 or ProRes MOV with embedded captions.
