Workflow question - What to do about OMF Audio and Pluraleyes?
on Apr 7, 2016 at 2:47:35 am

Hi,

I've just started cutting a short doc, which was transcoded (via AMA) by someone else over the past couple of years. Some of the audio was transcoded to MXF but the bulk of it was transcoded to OMF.

All of the shoots need to be synced. Some shoots are 1 camera + zoom audio, some are 2 camera shoots with the mics plugged in to one of the cameras and the rest are 2 camera shoots + zoom audio (there is an approximately equal percentage of each).

I have been running the dailies through Pluraleyes to create a sync map and about 2/3 of the footage gives me an "unsupported error" message. Through some troubleshooting with Red Giant, we figured out that this is because a bunch of the audio was transcoded as OMF, which isn't readable by Pluraleyes.

It was suggested that I reimport the media with audio settings set to MXF, which is easy enough, but I'm wondering if I have to reimport all of the video AND audio or if there is some way that I can just reimport all of the audio and have it link up with my existing master clips, or do I have to re-transcode video AND audio for everything that isn't linking up?

My concern is that the director has already cut some quick trailers, sequences and string outs and I'm concerned about being able to relink to new video or audio footage.

There is about 15 hours of footage total, so not too too much. Some of the problematic footage I've been able to sync by eye, some of it I've been able to sync with Avid's "waveform sync" option but there are many shoots with many short clips (sometimes on both cameras) and it would be a big time suck to try and do it all by hand.

Is there a way for me to re-transcode the camera audio only so that I can run all this through Pluraleyes? Do I just re-import all the audio AND video as MXF?

I would greatly appreciate any feedback on what might be the most efficient way for me to proceed.

Thanks so much!

Best,
Erin

You don't need to re-import anything.

Just select all your clips and then select Consolidate/Transcode.

Select Transcode
Deselect Convert Video.
Select Convert Audio Format PCM

I'll give that a shot, thank you!
