I am transcoding Arri UHD footage to DNxHR LB and it is taking absolutely forever. I've not had to do too much transcoding in the past and just sort of took the approach "it takes as long as it takes". However, in this case, the time is so lengthy that I probably shouldn't have gone down this road. In future, how do you calculate how long Avid will take on the transcoding? I am absolutely terrible with computer processor speeds hard drive speeds and that sort of thing. It's my achilles heel - something I've never quite been able to wrap my head around. What's the formula for these sorts of calculations? What is everything you have to take into account and how do you arrive at expected duration?
What I do is transcode a 10 or 15 min chunk...then multiply that. So if that 15 min chunk took 30 min to transcode, and I have 200 hours of footage...15min occurs 4 times in an hour, so I multiply 30 by 4 and I get 120. That's 120min per hour of footage. 200 hours will take 24,000 minutes to transcode, or 400 hours.
I did a test of this recently, with RED footage. Found that RESOLVE transcoded to Avid MXF much faster. I did the same 15 min chunk for testing.
