Avid Media Files question
on Jun 29, 2015 at 5:55:13 pm

Hi there,

I have a simple question regarding Avid Media Files.

I have three things:

1. A Media Composer project file
2. The associated Avid Media Files
3. The original media used to create the Avid Media Files for the project

Question: If I delete the Avid Media Files for my project, but keep the project file and also the original media, can I re-import the media later? And will it simply reconnect all of the offline footage in the timeline?
Or would I have to manually re-cut all of the clips in the source monitor and put them back into the timeline one by one?

The reason I'm asking is I'm running out of storage space because I have the original media and then the converted media in the form of Avid Media Files, so I'm wondering If I can delete the avid media files and then if I ever want to edit that project again in the future, can I just reimport all of the footage and have everything back to normal?
Hope that makes sense.

Thanks

Sure...

How did you import the footage? Capture from tape? AMA link to digital files? or just FILE>IMPORT?

Tape...simply recapture later.

AMA...simply relink to the AMA files and re-transcode.

IMPORT...simply BATCH IMPORT.

Personally, I always consolidate the final cut to another drive...just the media used in the cut with handles. That way I have that to tweak if needed later, and the other footage I can re-import as needed.

Hi Shane,

Thanks a lot for the reply.

I just imported all of the footage.
Could you explain how to consolidate the final cut? This is all new to me.

Thanks again

Will

Have the cut in a bin by itself. Go CLIP>CONSOLIDATE/TRANSCODE...you'll get the interface. Choose CONSOLIDATE, and a second or two for handles. And choose the drive to consolidate too. I typically consolidate to a small 1TB USB drive...it holds plenty. Have that plugged in and mounted before you do this.
