QT file came out too large
on Jun 10, 2015 at 9:44:31 pm

I'm using Avid MC 5.0.4 on MAC v10.6.8
I exported 1 hour doc to QT file on MPEG 4 Video. 1440 x 1080.
The good new is that it comes out as perfect resolution, but the bad news that it is a large as 30GB.(?)
What should I do to make it smaller, yet, keep the size as is?
Thanks, Avi

Export for what? Meaning...what's the intent for this export? Web? Broadcast? BluRay?

1440x1080 is anamorphic HD...HDV generally, some flavors of AVCHD. You really want a full raster 1920x1080 export. But again...export for what?

Thanks Shane
I would like to screen the doc in lecture rooms. That's why in need the highest resolution QT file.
The scenes in the doc were shot on HDV 1440x1080.
I guess at that point it will be too late to change the raster Dimension on the project's format.
But, I still want to understand how it possible to shrink the size of the exported file?

the bit rate basically determines file size. For 1 hr you probably had it set for 50+ Mbit bit rate or something close. I haven't used Avid to export anything other than QT Ref files and prefer to use AME, Rhoset or Sorenson for encoding purposes. Lower the bit rate considerably (like 8 Mbit or so) and it should still look more than presentable.

Thank you William.
Here is the deal:
Dimension: 720x480, Duration: 54:55 Codecs:MPEG4 Total bit rate:7,038
Dimension: " Duration: " Codecs:H264 Total bit rate:5,831

Dimension: 1440X1080 Duration: " Codecs:MPEG4 Total bit rate :83,252

Just by enlarging the dimension by approx 3 times the bit rate expends by almost 10 times.(?)

Is there any other way to export high resolution files with less pain?

Thanks,Avi

How are you presenting this anyway? From a DVD? Blu-Ray? A mp4 file to be played from a laptop etc?

If a playable DVD you're basically stuck with 720x480 to stay within DVD spec, but set a 16x9 flag so it displays properly. Set the video bit rate at 8000 kbs, audio at 192 kbps.

If Blu-Ray, set video bit rate to 25000 kbs. If mp4/h.264 file from a computer's hard drive, set the video bit rate from 8000-10000 kbs.

What reason are you so concerned with the file size? What encoder are you using? This doesn't have to be complicated.
