Avid MC 5, Reformat 4:3 video for 16:9

Hey, cannot remember the work flow for MC 5 when it comes to incorrect aspect ratios.

Basically some SD footage was captured incorrectly. The project was set to 16:9 when it should have been 4:3, when the bin of footage was opened into the HD project, all the footage is stretched.

I added the "Reformat" column and choose "Pill/Letterbox" and it does nothing.

Do I need to delete and re-import / capture?
Or is there a better work around to fixing SD footage in a HD project?

Thanks!

Alan

Its been awhile, but I think the switching of 16 x 9 and 4:3 projects was simply a monitoring function in Avid. I don't know if it actually did anything under the hood. If you go back to your SD timeline, can you not just switch it back and forth from 16x9 to 4x3?

Like I said, its been a while, but I thought that was all we did...right click on the monitor window and select either 16x9 or 4x3

The footage came in however it was shot over the SDI line.

Hey Glenn,

Thanks for responding.

I have changed the SD project to 4:3 from 16:9. So in the SD project it looks correct. However, the file that was from the 4:3 project that is now in the HD project is stretched, and the reformat column has no effect.

(I have two projects, the main project is HD, and there is archival footage that is SD, so we are capturing SD footage to the SD project, and opening the bins into the HD project.)

I don't want to apply an effect after the fact.

Additionally, I'm hoping I don't have to recapture the SD footage because it is long.

thanks for any more help!

How are you bringing this into the HD project...just file open Bin?

What kind of deck was the footage digitized from? (any deck or interface that was doing any kind of flagging?)

Glenn

Correct, file open bin, option or ctrl drag it into the HD project bin.

It was captured from a VHS, so no flags. The project was set to capture 16:9, and the tape was digitized that way. So it needs to be pillerboxed. It's just stretched in the HD project.

Thanks for any advice.

Make the aspect ratio column visible in your bin.
Change it to 4:3. Now pillarbix should do what you want.

THANK YOU!

It works now! I needed to add "Image Aspect Ratio" to the bin's column, select "4:3" and changed "Reformat" (which is also selected to the bin's column) to "Pillarbox/Letterbox"

Thanks for all the help! I knew it was something simple, and it was escaping me.

All the best!

Alan

I have a bin setting called Reformatting Columns made just for this purpose.
