Copying Projects to Another Drive
on Aug 22, 2014 at 2:40:59 am

I need to copy a project - all media and original project folder - to a client's drive.
I am on Mac OS.

Is it really as simple as copying the project and Avid Media folders to that drive?

What is considered best practice?

Yes, it is that simple assuming that everything in the Avid MediaFiles folder pertains to that project.

Things can get more complicated if you are managing several projects and want to copy the contents of just one. Then other methods needs to be employed.

If not, copy project folder, copy all Avid MediaFiles folder and put them in the same places on receiving end.

That's a good point.
Does one use the Consolidate feature to just collate media files
pertaining to that project? Does that create a new Media folder,
into which all pertinent files are copied and moved?
Then I am guessing that folder could be copied over,
along with the Project folder.

I use the Media Database Viewer on a PC at work
to move things around.
Is there a comparable utility for Mac?

That is certainly one method to use if you are dealing with several projects. Media Copy by Automatic Duck may still work and be a solution for you:

Personally I hate getting all the .new clips when consolidating. I wish Avid would have an option to not add that to the clip name and put it in its own column for tracking. But if you want to only work with media related to the sequence, you could do a "copy" rather than consolidate from the AAF export options to a dedicated drive/folder. I prefer that method as I always organize my dailies by "virtual reel" based on card, drive, date, etc with AutoSequence. Since those are now sequences, they can be used as part of this "copy" AAF export function.

I still want my long time requested function of select a bunch of clip, right click and select copy/move the OS takes over with that list. For sequences, it would know what was related, even for AMA linked files.

I right click my sequence to Consolidate and select my external drive.

I have created a Documents folder on my external, then Avid projects folder.
Project folder resides there. I already have some projects and media on there,
so Avid Media folder already exists.

Hit OK, it churns a bit then get this error message -
