Avid do not support pre version 8 on a monthly subscription
on Jun 13, 2014 at 1:24:20 pm

Hi guys, further to my recent post re activating my 6.5.4 software with a monthly subscription, I received this from Avid.

"Subscription and Floating Licenses are not supported for activating lower versions of Media Composer using your license of Media Composer 8.0 After using your trial version of Media Composer 6.5.4.2. You can proceed with upgrading to Media Composer 8.0 on your machine."

This therefore means I can only use version 8 with a monthly sub.
Has anyone else come across this at all?
My assistant is using version 6.5.4 and I wanted to get same.

V confusing...
Dan.

I don't think this is too surprising...you can't really get Adobe CS 5 or FCP 7 anymore, either.

Will your assistant need to open sequences that contain features added in v7 and above? The bins should work fine, as should sequences that use long standing standard features.

Thanks for the post.
I'm not sure what features have been added in version 7 and above.
It's quite simple cutting, not many FX.
I do a lot of sound work tho, various reverbs for different spaces, and for sound effects etc
Do you think that would be affected?

As long as your assistant's system and your system have the same audio plugins (or use the Avid integrated ones), it should work. Same goes for the default Avid video effects. Most of the effect and timeline specs were massively upgraded when Avid changed from 5.5 to 6.0, so you shouldn't encounter any problems. The only critical thing would be v7 bins, but since your assistant uses 6.5.4, I don't see a problem there aswell. Happy editing!

Thanks v much for your post Jan.
That's great news. Can I ask, when you say audio plug ins, do
you mean external plug ins. I only use Avid ones that come
With the software, so I assume I'm ok.

Thanks again,
Dan.

Using a dongle allows earlier version to be run. But you have find or buy a dongle.
V7 has some nice audio improvements. I love copy and paste of whole sections of audio rubberbanding.

Hey Dan, if you only use the Avid "internal" ones, you are very safe in compatibility.

Thanks very much for all the post's.
I think I'll go with version 8, it seems to be a relatively safe thing to do, especially as I am not doing anything that fancy, just straight cutting really.

Thanks again,
Dan.
