Export your spreadsheet as a tabbed delimited text file. Then run it through Avid Log Exchange to convert it to an ALE file. Then you can import it. I usually set it to "Merge with known master clips" in your import settings.

If you're on 7.0.3 it will merge that data without removing any custom metadata on those master clips. If you're on pre 7.0.3, merging could remove any custom metadata you have on those clips, so be aware of that. Michael Phillips describes it well here.

Seems simple. But I have tried making a simple shot spreadsheet in several apps (numbers, openoffice, textedit) I see no save as "tabbed delimited text file"
any thoughts there?

Unfortunately I can't speak for those programs. FileMaker Pro is popular for this purpose, and I've done it with Excel.

You need to do a "save as" from Excel as Tab. Make sure that all the column headers match exactly with uppercase, lowercase, and spelling. Here is the most recent Avid metadata whitepaper that exists, but is either unknown or hard to find. it will give you an idea of what each column is for and at the end how an ALE header should be constructed. AvidLogexchange as mentioned will take in a TAB file and create an ALE file after asking a few questions. Like about the film stuff. Just make it 35mm. Also make sure to keep a copy of the ALE program as v8 has removed both AvidLogExchange and MediaLog.

WHAT?!?! They got rid of Avid Log Exchange? Can you still import ALE's from Resolve or whatever dailies system you might be using to merge relevant metadata?

They no longer ship the application AvidLogExchange, but the ALE file format is still supported seeing as it is the only way to easily get metadata into Media Composer other than AAF (which is not easy).

Been trying to import spreadsheet data into MC 8.0 myself, and this thread keeps coming up when searching for ALE. It's crazy that Avid doesn't ship ALE any more, when I called tech support and asked them about it (after a lot of hold time), they finally advised me to download MC 7.0.4 and get ALE from that. I've posted it if anyone else is searching for it, hope forum rules allow for this.

This is the Mac version:

I blogged about the loss of ALE application here in August:

And how it can be used here:
